Michigan Automobile and Home Insurance Consumer Advocate Urges Michigan Supreme Court to Ban Use of Credit Scores

Lansing – Michigan’s Automobile and Home Insurance Consumer Advocate Melvin Butch Hollowell today urged the Michigan Supreme Court to affirm the state’s right to prohibit auto insurance companies from using occupation, education, and credit scores in setting auto insurance rates.

Hollowell’s comments came on the same day the court heard oral arguments in Insurance Institute of Michigan v. Commissioner, Financial and Insurance Services, SC Docket No’s 137400, 137407. Hollowell was appointed Michigan’s insurance advocate by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm in 2008.

Government insurance always inadequate

(Daily Herald) – In his speech to Congress, President Obama said “under my plan, individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance – just as most states require you to carry auto insurance.”

I was surprised President Obama compared his plan to auto insurance. Illinois requires a meager $40,000 coverage for death or injury – with a limit of $20,000 per person. This law is horribly inadequate! A serious injury can result in $200,000 in medical bills, many times higher than the required $20,000 of coverage. Most states have similar, ridiculously low requirements. California only mandates $15,000 for the death or injury of a person, and $30,000 if more than one person is killed or injured. Read more…

Blumenthal: Insurance companies may be breaking the law

(Legal Newsline) – Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Tuesday sent petitions to U.S Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to investigate insurance companies that steer auto repair customers to body shops of their choosing.

Blumenthal said companies that deny consumers the right to choose their own auto repair shop may be breaking both federal and state laws. Read more…

Life Insurance Sales Slump Eases

Annualized life insurance premium sales fell 23% in the first half of the year, the steepest slump in 67 years, but the rate of decline in the second quarter slowed from the quarter before, an industry association said Monday.

Life insurers have been battered the past year by billions of dollars in investment losses and write-downs amid the slumping stock market. Last month, the largest U.S. life insurer, MetLife Inc., swung to a loss on big investment losses linked to derivatives. Read more…

Insurance department sees increase in suspected auto insurance fraud

California. The number of suspected fraudulent cases of auto arson and theft has increased during the recession, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner said Wednesday.

The California Department of Insurance received 31 percent more referrals for suspected vehicle arson fraud cases last year than in 2007, a news release said. The total increased to 451 cases in 2008 from 344 in 2007. The Department also received about 200 more suspected vehicle theft fraud case referrals last year than the year before. Read more…
