(NBC New York) – Quality of Insurance Linked to Cancer Survival: Survey
A new poll conducted by the country’s leading cancer advocacy organization finds that the odds of surviving cancer correlate with whether a patient has health insurance – and the quality of that health insurance.
The poll, commissioned by the American Cancer Society, looked at more than 1,000 families affected by cancer. It finds that more than 40-percent of families had troubled affording health care in the last few years and more than one-in-five families were forced to use up all or most of its savings because of medical costs. The insurance industry plays a significant role in California’s economy, employing hundreds of thousands of workers, investing billions of dollars in state and local governments and paying the fourth largest amount in taxes to the state’s General Fund, according to a 2009 report released today by insurers.
The report, “The Insurance Industry’s Impact on California’s Economy 2009,” demonstrates that:
Insurers doing business in California employ 244,000 Californians.
Insurers invest $723 billion in California’s economy, including $29.2 billion in state and municipal bonds. Insurers’ bond investments finance the construction of schools, roads, water and sewer systems, low-cost housing and other projects that support the state’s economy. Read more…

(Reuters) – Shares of several life insurers, including Hartford Financial (HIG.N) and Lincoln Financial Group (LNC.N), rose on Friday after the companies got a preliminary green light to participate in a U.S. funding program.
Hartford and Lincoln announced late on Thursday they could receive $3.4 billion and $2.5 billion, respectively, from a U.S. Treasury Funding Program that was originally referred to as TARP when it was instituted to help troubled banks last year. Read more…

State Farm’s 3.3 million California auto insurance policyholders will soon see a decrease in their premiums, as the California Department of Insurance approved an 8 percent, $219 million rate cut.
The 8 percent rate cut is a statewide average. The actual savings for individual policyholders may be different, depending on a number of rating factors, the company said. Read more…

(Insurancenewsnet) – The American Insurance Association (AIA) opposed Maine LD 1305, An Act To Provide for Prompt Resolution of Insurance Claims by Providing for a Direct Remedy by Consumers, at a hearing today before the Insurance and Financial Services Committee. According to AIA, the legislation would create a new private right of action against insurers for third-party claimants.
“This is anti-consumer legislation that is unnecessary and will increase litigation costs at the expense of Maine’s policyholders and businesses during a time when the state’s consumers can ill-afford additional costs,” said John Murphy, AIA northeast region vice president. Read more…
